Truckers
Community Health Centre:One of the frontline projects taken up by our club since the Rotary
Year 1995 -96 has been the cause of AIDS. As it is well known this dreadful
scourge AIDS has transcended all boundaries and has made tremendous inroads
into all third world countries including India. In order to combat this
growing problem and in an attempt to safeguard the youth of Mangalore,
Rotary Mangalore Mid Town has been actively involved in serving this most
demanding social cause by means of various programmes that we have
undertaken in the recent years. In an attempt to prevent the spread through
high-risk groups such as truck drivers, a Truckers Community Health Centre
has been set up on National Highway 17 at its entry point into the city of
Mangalore. We have also established a cell known as the AID TO AIDS CELL
with is located at the Zonal Testing Centre for AIDS at the University
Medical Centre, Mangalore. The cell equipped with a full time counselor has
beencounseling Aids patients and their families and has also
been involved in the rehabilitation process of AIDS victims, particularly
those rejected and ostracized by their own family members.Consequently, it was felt that a palliative care centre for these
unfortunate AIDS victims was the need of the hour.
Snehadaan
– A centre for rehabilitation of victims of AIDS: The realization of
the dream to set up a palliative care centre for AIDS victims began when our
Rotarian Eugene Rent and Ann Benita Rent donated 2.6 acres of land to the
Order of St. Camillus, an Italian congregation, who joint forces with Rotary
Mangalore Mid Town to set up this project. The Centre measuring about 36,000
sq. ft. when completed by December 2000 would cater to about 40 full-blown
AIDS victims and their families. Visit the Snehadaan website at http://snehadaan-mng.org
